Laser whitening vs lamp-based whitening in Point Cook.
Laser whitening and lamp whitening both use a peroxide gel; the difference is what activates it. Laser whitening uses short pulses of laser light aimed at the gel, while lamp systems shine a bright light over the teeth for longer cycles. This page compares the two so you can talk through the choice with your dentist at Magical Smiles Point Cook.
Wanting whiter teeth, but not booking?
Often the hold-up isn't the idea of whitening. It's memories of a sensitive session, or not knowing how long it will take. If any of these sound like you, read on.
Our dental technology guide covers other equipment. To learn how lasers work, see dental laser technology; for scans, see digital scanning and 3D imaging.
- You smile with your lips closed in photos without really meaning to.
- A past whitening session left your teeth sensitive, and that's what you remember.
- You want whiter teeth but aren't sure how much time it takes.
- You've wondered how laser and lamp whitening differ.
- You want to know how to keep results once you have them.
What the laser does during whitening.
In laser whitening, the laser is aimed at the whitening gel on your teeth. The gel absorbs the laser energy, which helps activate it.
The gel does the whitening; the laser's role is activation. Because the energy is directed at the gel in short pulses, the aim is to limit heat reaching the tooth. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums before anything starts.
Whitening strength is regulated. The Dental Board of Australia explains that only registered dental practitioners can use or supply high-concentration whitening products, meaning over 18% carbamide peroxide or 6% hydrogen peroxide.
For the treatment itself, see laser teeth whitening, or browse all laser dentistry in Point Cook.
- A peroxide gel does the whitening, as with other in-chair methods.
- Laser energy is aimed at the gel rather than straight at the tooth.
- The gel is activated in short pulses rather than long lamp cycles.

Laser whitening and lamp whitening, side by side.
Here is how the two compare on the questions patients ask most. Comfort and sensitivity vary from person to person with either method.
| Laser whitening | Lamp whitening | |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | Short laser pulses are aimed at the gel. Sensitivity can still happen, as with any whitening. | A lamp shines over the gel for several longer cycles; some people feel warmth or brief twinges. |
| Timing | Activation happens in short rounds; total time depends on your teeth. | Activation runs in longer cycles; total time depends on the system. |
| Heat | Energy is directed at the gel, aiming to limit heat reaching the tooth. | Light and warmth are applied over the teeth for longer periods. |
Comfort, timing and sensitivity vary between people with any whitening method. Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums first and explain what is realistic.
Whitening fades, so plan to top up.
Any whitening, laser or lamp, fades slowly as coffee, tea, red wine and everyday life leave new stains. Regular hygiene visits and occasional top-ups help results last.
Frequent Smiles is Magical Smiles' whitening top-up programme for patients who keep up regular hygiene visits. What it includes, who is eligible and the full terms are explained on our Frequent Smiles Point Cook page and by our team.
