Laser treatment for snoring in Point Cook.

Laser snoring treatment uses gentle laser energy, with no cutting, to firm the soft tissue at the back of the mouth so it vibrates less when you sleep. At Magical Smiles Point Cook we check first whether your snoring could be sleep apnoea, then explain whether this laser dentistry option suits you.

Is this page for you?

You may want to read on if…

A quick check that this is the right page. If several of these sound like you, the rest of the page should help.

  • You snore on most nights, not just when you are overtired.
  • Your partner has moved to the spare room.
  • You wake up tired even after a full night in bed.
  • The jokes about your snoring have stopped being funny at home.
  • You have thought about a sleep study but haven't booked one.
  • You have heard about laser treatment for snoring and want to know if it could suit you.

If you have already had a sleep study, been diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnoea and started CPAP, this treatment is not designed for you.

Your sleep physician manages that condition, and we are happy to help with any dental care that supports it.

Snoring or sleep apnoea?

Snoring can be more than a noise.

Simple snoring and sleep apnoea can sound the same at night, but they are different problems. Knowing which one you have matters before any treatment.

01

Simple snoring

Soft tissue at the back of the mouth relaxes during sleep and flutters as you breathe. It is disruptive for whoever shares your room and can affect how well you both sleep, though on its own it is usually not dangerous.

02

Obstructive sleep apnoea

The airway narrows or closes again and again during sleep, briefly stopping breathing until the body rouses to reopen it. People often wake exhausted. It is a medical condition that needs a sleep physician to diagnose it.

03

The grey area

Often you can't tell which one you have without testing. We don't diagnose sleep apnoea, but we can help you decide whether a sleep study is worth doing and what to consider next.

How it works

Firmer tissue, less vibration.

Snoring happens when loose tissue at the back of the mouth vibrates as you breathe. The idea behind laser treatment is to firm that tissue so it vibrates less.

Gentle pulses of laser light are applied to the soft palate and nearby tissue. The heat is designed to prompt the collagen in that tissue to tighten over the following weeks. There is no cutting, and most people feel warmth rather than pain, so numbing is usually not needed.

Some people with simple snoring find it becomes quieter or less frequent after a course. Others notice little change. We will give you a realistic view before you start.

Good to know

What laser snoring treatment can't do.

It is not surgery, and it does not remove any tissue.

It is not a treatment for severe obstructive sleep apnoea, which should be managed by a sleep physician.

It does not work for everyone. Some people improve a lot, some a little and some not at all.

It is not a substitute for a sleep study when your symptoms call for one.

Treatment areas

The three areas where snoring usually begins.

Depending on your assessment, each session covers some or all of these areas. Nothing is injected or removed; the aim is for the tissue to firm up over the following weeks.

Zone 02

The soft palate

The soft back part of the roof of the mouth, where most snoring vibration begins. It receives slow, even passes.

Your first visit

A chat, a look and a clear next step.

Not knowing what happens can make it hard to book. Here is what the first appointment involves.

  1. We listen.

Tell us how often you snore, what your partner hears, how you feel in the morning and what you have tried. Partners are welcome to come along, as they often notice things you can't.

  2. We look.

Your dentist checks your soft palate, throat, tongue position, jaw and bite. There are no needles and no clean at this visit.

  3. We advise.

Depending on what we find, we may suggest a sleep study, explain whether laser treatment suits you or talk about a custom oral appliance. Sometimes the best advice is to wait and watch.

  4. You decide.

You leave understanding your options. Nothing is booked unless you ask for it.

At the first visit

  • About 20–30 minutes.
  • You see one of our dentists.
  • No needles, and each step is explained.
  • Your partner is welcome to join you.

If you go ahead with laser treatment

  • Usually a short course of sessions spaced a few weeks apart.
  • Each session is brief.
  • Usually no needles or anaesthetic.
  • Most people eat, drink and talk normally straight after.
  • Costs are explained at your first visit.

Lasers are also used for other treatments, such as laser cavity treatment and laser gum therapy.
