Metal braces: a guide for Point Cook patients
Metal braces use small stainless-steel brackets and a thin archwire to move teeth, step by step, into a planned position. Metal is usually the lowest-cost fixed brace, and at Magical Smiles braces start from $4,500 per arch. They stay on around the clock, so there are no trays to remember. Ask our Point Cook team which brace types are currently available at the clinic. Here's how they work, what living with them is like and what shapes the fee.
Metal braces in brief
Metal braces are a fixed orthodontic appliance. A small stainless-steel bracket is bonded to the front of each tooth, and a thin archwire links them all. The wire applies light, steady pressure, and at each visit we replace or adjust it so your teeth move a little further. Because nothing comes out between appointments, the braces keep working while you get on with life.
Metal braces are one of several ways to straighten teeth, along with ceramic braces, Fastbraces and clear aligners. At our Point Cook clinic we'll tell you which of these are currently available and help you compare them honestly before you decide.
Why people still choose metal
If your mental picture of braces comes from an old school photo, today's brackets may surprise you: they're smaller and smoother than they used to be. People choose metal for practical reasons:
- They manage a wide range of bites. Fixed brackets give close control over each tooth, which helps with crowding, gaps, rotated teeth and many bite problems.
- There's nothing to remember. Aligners only work while you wear them; braces work around the clock without any effort from you.
- They're usually the most affordable fixed option. Stainless steel is strong and simple, and that's generally reflected in the fee.
- They're robust. Metal copes with everyday knocks better than ceramic.
The trade-off is that people can see them. If that's a concern, ceramic braces or aligners might suit you better, and we're happy to talk through both. For a detailed look at fixed braces versus clear aligners, our sister clinic's braces versus Invisalign comparison is worth a read.
Metal braces or clear aligners?
It's a comparison many people make before booking. Metal braces are fixed, so they keep working around the clock with no trays to lose or forget, and they give fine control over each tooth, which helps with rotated teeth and bite corrections. Clear aligners are removable and much less visible, which suits many adults, but they rely on you wearing them for 20 to 22 hours a day.
Cost can play a part too: braces and aligners both start from $4,500 per arch, and metal is usually the lowest-cost fixed brace. The right answer depends on your teeth and your routine, so we'll explain which options suit you at your consultation. Our clear aligners page covers the removable route in more detail.
Metal braces for teens and adults
Metal braces suit teenagers and adults alike. For teens, fixed braces remove the daily decision about whether to wear an appliance, which can make things simpler for busy families. For adults, the main requirement is healthy gums and supporting bone. For younger children who are still growing, a different conversation may make more sense first; see Myobrace for kids.
What treatment involves, visit by visit
1. Consultation and examination. We check your teeth, gums and bite and discuss what you'd like to change. Planning uses records such as photos and a digital scan or impressions; ask at your consultation how yours will be taken. Healthy gums matter before any tooth movement, so if yours need attention we'll start there, often with a scale and clean.
2. Your plan and written quote. You'll receive a plan showing which teeth will move, what the braces will do and an estimated timeframe, with the fee in writing before anything is booked.
3. Fitting day. The brackets are bonded one at a time and the first wire is placed. It takes longer than a check-up but involves no surgery. Expect your teeth to feel tender for a few days; soft food and your usual pain relief help.
4. Adjustment visits. Every few weeks you'll come back so we can check progress and replace or adjust the wire. These visits are usually shorter than the fitting. healthdirect's guide to orthodontists, last reviewed in November 2024, notes that routine appointments during treatment may be every 4 to 12 weeks.
5. Brackets off, retainer on. When your teeth reach their planned position, the brackets are removed and each tooth is polished. Teeth naturally try to drift back, so a retainer is part of every plan, and wearing it as advised protects the work you've put in.
Everyday life with metal braces
Most people get used to braces within a couple of weeks. A few habits make the months ahead easier:
- Food: hard, sticky and chewy foods can bend a wire or dislodge a bracket. Cut apples and crusty bread into small pieces, and skip toffee and chewing gum.
- Cleaning: food collects around brackets, so brush carefully after meals and use interdental brushes or floss threaders. We'll show you how at your fitting.
- Comfort: press a little orthodontic wax over any bracket that rubs while your mouth adjusts.
- Sport: if you play contact sport, ask about a mouthguard designed for braces.
- Breakages: a loose bracket or poking wire is rarely an emergency but can slow progress. Call (03) 8338 1515 and we'll fix it. For severe pain or swelling, see our emergency dentist page.
What affects the cost of metal braces
Braces at Magical Smiles start from $4,500 per arch. Your fee depends on things we can only judge after examining you:
- whether one arch or both need treatment;
- how much movement is needed and how complex your bite is;
- how long treatment is likely to take and how many visits that involves;
- any care needed first, such as fillings or a clean;
- the retainer that finishes your treatment.
You'll see the full cost in writing before you commit. To get a feel for regular repayments, try our budget calculator. It's an estimate, not a quote.
Ways to pay
We accept most health funds with on-the-spot HICAPS claims, so if your extras cover includes orthodontics you can claim at the desk. How much you get back depends on your fund and level of cover, so it's worth checking with them first. To spread the cost, we also offer Humm, Afterpay, the National Dental Plan and SuperCare for early release of superannuation, each with its own terms and approval. Our payment options page has the details. Metal braces are a common choice for teenagers, so it helps to know that the Child Dental Benefits Schedule doesn't fund them. Services Australia's guidance, last updated on 1 January 2026, lists orthodontic dental work among the services it won't cover. The scheme can still pay for an eligible child's check-ups, cleaning and fillings, up to $1,158 over two calendar years (or $1,132 if their two-year period began in 2025).
General dentist or specialist orthodontist?
Our Point Cook dentists, Dr Rachna Yadav (Principal Dentist) and Dr Amolak Deep, are registered general dentists, not specialist orthodontists. Many straightforward to moderate cases are well suited to care in general practice. If we think your bite would be better managed by a specialist orthodontist, we'll tell you plainly at your consultation.
Metal braces: common questions from Point Cook patients
Do metal braces hurt?
Having brackets fitted isn't usually painful. Most people feel pressure and tenderness for a few days after the fitting and after some adjustments. Soft food, orthodontic wax and your usual pain relief generally help it settle.
How long will I need to wear braces?
It depends on how far your teeth need to move and how they respond, so it's different for everyone. We give you an estimated timeframe in your written plan after your examination.
Am I too old for metal braces?
No. There's no upper age limit for braces. What matters for adults is healthy gums and supporting bone, which we check at your consultation.
Are metal braces cheaper than ceramic braces or aligners?
Metal braces usually cost less than ceramic braces. At Magical Smiles, braces and clear aligners both start from $4,500 per arch, and your final fee depends on your case. You'll get the exact figure in writing first.
Can I book a braces consultation on a Saturday?
Yes. Magical Smiles Point Cook is open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm, and closed on Sundays. Book online or call (03) 8338 1515.
