Laser gumtreatment in Point Cook
Laser gum treatment, or laser-assisted periodontal therapy (LAPT), uses laser light to help clean infected gum pockets as part of treating gum disease. At Magical Smiles Point Cook it is added to a thorough clean and a maintenance plan when your dentist thinks it will help.
Laser gum treatment at Magical Smiles Point Cook is provided by our general dentists, not specialist periodontists. Suitability is checked at an assessment, and results vary between people.
Gum disease is common and often doesn't hurt in its early stages. Without treatment it can wear away the bone that supports your teeth, and teeth may eventually loosen.
How common is it? In the national adult oral health study of 2017–18, 30.1% of Australian adults aged 15 and over had moderate or severe periodontitis, and 29% had gingivitis, the milder early stage (AIHW, page updated 6 August 2026). The Better Health Channel names smoking and poorly managed diabetes as risk factors for periodontitis.
At Magical Smiles Point Cook, a laser is one of the tools your dentist can use to clean deep pockets more thoroughly, alongside hand cleaning and a plan for keeping your gums healthy.
Looking for LANAP? LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a trademarked United States protocol tied to one particular laser system. What we provide is LAPT, laser-assisted periodontal therapy: a different approach with similar goals. An assessment decides whether it suits you.
What is laser-assisted periodontal therapy?
LAPT is gum disease treatment that adds laser light to a deep clean. The laser is passed into the pockets between gum and tooth, where the bacteria that drive gum disease collect.
The aim is to reduce those bacteria and remove inflamed pocket lining, giving the gum a better chance to settle and tighten. How well it works differs from person to person.
LAPT is never a one-off fix. At Magical Smiles Point Cook it sits within a plan that includes regular hygiene and review visits, and your dentist will tell you at your assessment whether it is worth adding in your case.

When your dentist may suggest LAPT
LAPT is usually considered for gum disease that has gone beyond the early stage, or that has not settled with cleaning alone. An assessment tells us whether it applies to you.
When gum disease has moved past gingivitis, laser therapy may be added to help bring it under control. Responses vary.
Deep spaces between gum and tooth are hard to clean fully by hand. The fine laser tip can reach down into them.
If bleeding and inflammation persist after scaling and root planing, laser therapy may be added to the next round of treatment.
If x-rays show bone loss, LAPT may form part of a plan to slow the disease and protect the bone you still have.
Please note: Laser gum treatment here is provided by general dentists, not specialist periodontists. Suitability is assessed first, and no particular result can be promised.
What laser gum treatment looks like at Magical Smiles Point Cook
The laser tip works inside the affected pocket, with the aim of leaving healthy gum nearby alone.
In some cases laser dentistry can reduce the need for gum surgery with a scalpel, which many patients prefer.
Laser therapy is always combined with deep cleaning and home care advice, because the laser alone cannot control gum disease.
Your dentist measures your gum pockets and reviews x-rays before recommending anything.
Magical Smiles Point Cook is at 220 Point Cook Road, open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Gum disease needs ongoing care. We set a maintenance schedule that suits how your gums respond.
How LAPT works, from first visit to review
Your dentist measures the depth of each gum pocket and checks x-rays to see how far the disease has gone.
If laser therapy is recommended, you'll hear what it involves, how many visits to expect and what it costs.
The gums are numbed if needed, the pockets are cleaned, and the laser is passed into the affected areas.
Pockets are measured again at review, and regular hygiene visits help keep the disease under control.
LAPT and standard gum treatment
Scaling and root planing, a deep clean below the gumline, is still the foundation of gum disease treatment. LAPT adds to it rather than replacing it.
During laser therapy, light energy is directed at the inflamed pocket lining and the bacteria around the root, including in spots that hand instruments find hard to reach.
Your assessment decides whether LAPT is worth adding. We'll explain the options so you can make an informed choice.
