Laser gum depigmentation lightens dark or patchy gums by removing the thin, pigmented top layer so fresh, more even-toned gum can heal in its place. At Magical Smiles Point Cook your dentist first checks that your gums are healthy, then explains how much change is realistic for you.
Some people simply have darker gums, for the same reason skin tones differ: melanin. It is normal and healthy. Often it only becomes noticeable in a flash photo, or after teeth whitening makes the contrast stand out. It is one of several cosmetic options covered on our laser dentistry in Point Cook page.
General information only. Darker gums are a normal variation, not a health problem. Treating them is a cosmetic choice, never a necessity.
Melanin is made by cells in the outermost layer of gum. Laser light is absorbed by that pigmented layer, so your dentist can remove it a little at a time. There is usually no cutting with a blade and no stitches.
New gum grows over the area in the days and weeks that follow and often looks lighter and more even. The shape of your gumline stays the same; only the colour is treated.
General information only. Comfort, healing time and how long the lighter tone lasts all vary from person to person. Your dentist explains what to expect for your gums first.
We explain every step at your assessment, so you know what the day involves.
Your dentist checks your gum health and where the pigment sits, and answers your questions before anything is booked.
Local anaesthetic numbs the gum so you stay comfortable.
The laser is moved gently over the darker areas, section by section.
The gum may feel tender for a few days. A short review visit checks that it is healing well.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, please seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
Plenty of people ask about gum colour on its own. Others raise it while planning veneers, whitening or a smile makeover, because brighter teeth can make darker gums more noticeable.
There is no fixed order. You might treat your gums first, alongside other work, or later on. Your dentist can help you plan the timing around anything else you have in mind.
If gum colour is part of a larger plan, one appointment can cover your gums, your teeth and the best order to do things.
What suits you depends on the health of your gums and teeth, and results vary. You'll get an honest view before any plan is agreed.
Your gums are checked for disease before any cosmetic treatment, and you hear what a laser can and can't change.
Many patients need only one treatment appointment, followed by a brief review.
Whether gum colour is the only thing on your list or part of a bigger plan, we fit the timing to you.
Healthy gums come in many shades and textures. When patients describe the look they are after, they often mean a fairly even coral-pink without dark patches or a band along the gumline.
How close you can get depends on your own gum tissue and pigment. No particular shade can be promised, and your dentist will be honest about what to expect.
This is a general reference image, not a patient result, and it is not a promise of any outcome. Results vary with your own gum tissue.
A single assessment is usually enough to check your gums and talk through realistic results. Have a quick question first? Call our Point Cook team.
